Why does making money have to come before helping my community?

I dont see the point to life at the moment as I'm working 60 hours a week and getting nowhere. I have been fortunate to buy a little 3 x 1 cottage, after years of saving and I really love it. I would much rather be more useful in the Community helping residents such as taking the elderly to appointments and helping them with their shopping, spending one morning a week with the Riding for the Disabled and helping give them the freedom of movement. I'd like to have time at the Community Centre setting up projects and co ordinating programs for people. But here I am, wasting away all these skills sitting around an office on a minesite. Sure it's easy work for me and regular money and its what I need to do right now to get on top of a mortgage and other commitments, but why is the necessity to make money the bigger option rather than being part of the Community and interacting with others by helping them out?
